2007 Jeep® Liberty Remains a Leader in Mid-Size SUV segment

August 31, 2006 , Auburn Hills, Mich. -

Since its introduction in 2002, the Jeep® Liberty continues to be a leader in the mid-size sport-utility vehicle (SUV) segment with total U.S. sales of 166,883 in the 2005 calendar year. For 2007, the Jeep Liberty offers the Sport and Limited models in 4x2 and 4x4 configurations.

“The Jeep Liberty stands apart from less capable competitors by combining the best on-road refinement with Jeep’s legendary off-road capability,” said George Murphy, Senior Vice President – Global Marketing, Chrysler Group. “The 2007 Jeep Liberty gives enthusiasts a sense of personal freedom and capability.”

Safety is paramount at the Chrysler Group, and the 2007 Jeep Liberty is no exception. Providing a secure driving experience translates into real-world content and features, such as standard Electronic Stability Program, advanced multi-stage driver and front-passenger air bags and optional side-curtain air bag with roll-detection system. The Jeep Liberty received the government’s highest rating for side-impact crash protection from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

“WHAT’S NEW FOR 2007”

New Models

  • Sport and Limited 4x2 and 4x4 models
  • New color: Jeep Green Metallic

DESIGN

Trevor Creed, Senior Vice President – Design, Chrysler Group: “Jeep Liberty is immediately recognizable as a Jeep 4x4 with its large, round headlamps, signature seven-slot grille and the vehicle’s upright stance. Jeep Liberty’s wide wheel flares, roof rack side rails and externally mounted spare tire give the vehicle an adventurous, ready-for-any-challenge appearance.”

Refreshed in 2005, the Jeep Liberty possesses a classic Jeep appearance with its seven-slot grille, clamshell hood and round headlamps. The Jeep Liberty is available in either Sport or Limited models.

The Jeep Liberty Sport features a body-color grille with provisions for optional fog lamps. The fog lamp and park-turn lamps are positioned to protect them from road debris. The mold-in-color front fascia’s twin-tube appearance creates a custom accessory look with a crisp, horizontal shape, giving the Liberty Sport a wide, stable appearance. The Sport also features a sill cover to protect the bodyside from road blast.

The Jeep Liberty Limited features more refined characteristics such as a chrome grille, chrome bodyside molding — with “Liberty” prominently molded in — and chrome roof rack side rails. The vehicle is accented by painted body-color front and rear fascias and fender flares. Fog lamps are standard on the Jeep Liberty Limited, and tow hooks are available as part of the Skid Plate Group. The Jeep Liberty Limited model also features a sill cover to protect the bodysides from road blast.

The Liberty Renegade is no longer available.

ENGINEERING

Craig Love, Vice President – Rear-Wheel Drive Product Team, Chrysler Group: “With a choice of two four-wheel-drive systems, a powerful engine and a refined on-road driving experience, the 2007 Jeep Liberty matches up to today’s active lifestyles.”

Power-Packed Engine

3.7-liter SOHC V-6
The 3.7-liter, single-overhead-cam (SOHC), V-6 engine is standard on the 2007 Jeep Liberty. It produces 210 hp (157 kW) @ 5,200 rpm and 235 lb.-ft. (319 N•m) of torque @ 4,000 rpm. The valve train and combustion chamber work together as a system to enhance low-speed torque while providing a smooth idle and minimal engine noise. A sophisticated Electronic Throttle Control system tailors throttle response to pedal movement based on operating conditions, and maintains a consistent vehicle speed on rolling grades when cruise control is active. New on the 3.7-liter engine for 2007 is an exhaust gas recirculation, valve which helps increase fuel economy.

The 2.8-liter common rail diesel engine is no longer available.

Two Four-Wheel-Drive Systems
The Jeep Liberty offers two four-wheel-drive systems: Command-Trac® and Selec-Trac®.

Command-Trac is a part-time, shift-on-the-fly system providing legendary Jeep capability. It offers the peace of mind of available four-wheel-drive capability for use on slippery or loose surfaces (snow, mud or sand). Using Command-Trac, the driver can place the vehicle in two-wheel drive (2Hi), part-time four-wheel-drive high range (4 part time) or four-wheel-drive low range (4Lo), depending on the capability needed. In 2Hi, the front axle spins freely while power is sent to the rear axle and wheels, which then drives the vehicle. In 4 part time, the transfer case mechanically locks the front and rear driveshafts together, which then rotate at the same speed for maximum traction. In 4Lo, the engine power is sent through another set of gears that multiply torque 2.72:1. By more than doubling the gear ratio, the vehicle greatly improves torque and control in low-speed driving situations. Command-Trac is standard on the four-wheel-drive Jeep Liberty models.

Selec-Trac is a full-time four-wheel system that provides full-time capability and security. Using Selec-Trac, the driver can place the vehicle in a variety of four-wheel-drive settings, including two-wheel drive (2Hi), part-time four-wheel-drive high range (4 part time), full-time four-wheel-drive high range (4 full time) or low-range four-wheel drive (4Lo). In 2Hi, the front axle spins freely while power is sent to the rear axle and wheels, which then drives the vehicle. In 4 part time, the center differential mechanically locks the front and rear driveshafts together, which then rotate at the same speed for maximum traction. In 4 full-time mode, the center differential splits the power, sending 48 percent to the front axle and 52 percent to the rear. The transfer case may be left in this position on any road surface, including dry, paved roads. In the 4Lo range, the engine power is sent through another set of gears that multiply torque 2.72:1. By more than doubling the transfer case gear ratio, the vehicle has greatly improved torque and control in severe conditions. Selec-Trac is available on four-wheel-drive Jeep Liberty models.

Two Transmission Offerings
Two transmissions are offered on the 2007 Jeep Liberty – a six-speed manual and a four-speed automatic.

The six-speed manual transmission provides optimal shift quality and quietness. The six-speed manual transmission is available on Jeep Liberty Sport 4x2 and 4x4 models.

Line pressure within the four-speed automatic transmission is based on demand for improved fuel efficiency. The four-speed automatic transmission is optional on the Jeep Liberty Sport, and standard on Limited models.

Solid Suspension System
Liberty’s IS 43 suspension features cast-iron lower control arms designed to withstand rock strikes and curb hits. Concentric coil springs and shock absorbers mounted above the upper control arms provide protection from off-road hazards, while front-suspension jounce bumpers reduce harshness and “bottom out” when encountering large bumps. The solid-axle rear suspension features an A-shaped upper arm, dual trailing lower arms, coil springs and stabilizer bar to help provide a smooth, comfortable ride on- and off-road.

Jeep Trail Rated®
The Jeep Trail Rated badge on the 2007 Jeep Liberty verifies that the vehicle has been designed to perform in a variety of challenging off-road conditions identified by five key off-road performance categories: traction, ground clearance, maneuverability, articulation and water fording.

Jeep Trail Rated is an industry-leading methodology that objectively measures and consistently predicts off-road performance for all Jeep vehicles. Through a combination of natural and controlled field tests, as well as computer-simulated environments, Jeep Trail Rated provides a repeatable and consistent measurement of off-road performance for Jeep vehicles. Only Jeep vehicles are Trail Rated.
