Selec-Trac® NV242 Full-Time Four-Wheel Drive

Auburn Hills, Mich. August 7, 2005 -

Selec-Trac® is a shift-on-the-fly system that provides full-time capability and security.

Four-Wheel Drive Modes
Two-wheel drive (2Hi): In this position, the front axle spins freely while power is sent to the rear axle and wheels, which then drives the vehicle.

Part-time four-wheel drive high-range (4 PART TIME): In this position, the center differential mechanically locks the front and rear driveshafts together, which then rotate at the same speed for maximum traction (this position is designed for temporary use when extra traction is required; only use on slippery or loose surfaces).

Full-time four-wheel drive high-range (4 FULL TIME): In this position, the center differential splits the power, sending 48 percent to the front axle, and 52 percent to the rear. The transfer case may be left in this position on any road surface - including dry, paved roads.

Neutral (N): This position allows the vehicle to be towed behind another vehicle (such as a motor home) without uncoupling the driveshafts.

Low-range four-wheel drive (4Lo): In low range, the engine power is sent through another set of gears that multiply torque 2.72:1. By more than doubling the transfer gear ratio, the vehicle has greatly improved torque and control in severe conditions (for use in more challenging off-road situations)

Trac-Lok® Limited-Slip Rear Differential
Automatically senses torque differences between the rear wheels and delivers additional torque to the wheel with the most traction.

When to Engage Four-Wheel Drive
Full time: On dry, wet or snow-covered pavement, sand, gravel, etc. The vehicle may be in this position year round.

Part time: For conditions that require increased traction, including deep snow or deep mud.

Low range: When conditions require added low-speed power, for technical driving situations or circumstances where added torque is helpful, such as pulling a boat trailer out of the water.

How to Engage Four-Wheel Drive
Part-time or full-time high modes: Shift transfer case lever from 2WD to 4 PART TIME or 4 FULL TIME at speeds up to 55 mph.

Low range: Slow to 2-3 mph and put the vehicle transmission into Neutral. While still rolling forward in Neutral, shift the transfer-case lever firmly and smoothly, without pausing in the transfer-case Neutral position, into 4Lo. Return the vehicle transmission to the desired gear.
